New topics and skills for GCSE Geography

The new GCSEs for Geography are confirmed and all Awarding Bodies have prepared their new specifications for first teaching in September 2016. With the new format, not only are there revised core topics but there is also a new assessment of fieldwork. These changes present both opportunities and challenges with regard to new content, the increased emphasis on quantification skills as well as significant changes in the assessment objectives (AOs).

Come and explore how to nurture confident and competent learners at the start of these new-style GCSEs. In this one-day course suitable for all Awarding Bodies, David will investigate particularly:

  • the real meaning of the new GCSE criteria for geography and what it means in terms of assessment
  • the full implications of the removal of controlled assessment and the possible models of fieldwork delivery
  • how to develop greater subject expertise in using a wider variety of resources beyond the textbook
  • how to develop mathematical skills in geography from an early stage in the course
  • an exploration of the new core physical and human topics, together with the linked case-studies
  • how to prepare a range of students for a more evaluative and synthesis-style questions.

Exploring the new GCSE criteria and their immediate implications for teaching and learning at Key Stage 3 as well as 4 will also help delegates to consolidate their understanding of the Curriculum 2014 programme of study for KS3 geography.

This course is for:

• Geography teachers who are teaching Key Stage 3 and/or Key Stage 4

• Leaders of Geography departments

One of the best inset days I’ve ever attended; very relevant and informative. Great up-to-date information and teaching suggestions.

One of the most informative courses I have been on. I really valued the insight and expertise of the presenter.
A great day with lots of examples that can be taken away and used in school.
Very useful and thought-provoking especially about AO and the role of evaluation.
Excellent overview of new geographical ideas and focus on GIS.
An incredibly informing day which certainly opened my mind to the way we teach our subject. It will be a challenge, but actually a very refreshing challenge!
