Supporting struggling readers and writers in Key Stages 2 & 3

On average, 10% of pupils leaving Primary School are considerably below the expected standard in reading. These pupils struggle with reading and writing across the curriculum. They need practical, targeted, and achievable strategies if they are to catch up with their peers.

This CPD course for teachers will:

  • Recap on the basics of decoding skills
  • Suggest ways of hearing children read diagnostically
  • Explore strategies for developing fluency
  • Put comprehension at the heart of reading
  • Promote a core vocabulary for reading and spelling
  • Show the potential of modelled writing
  • Look at ways of supporting these learners across the curriculum

Session 1: What’s difficult about reading?

In this session we will unpick the reading process and revisit:

  • Phonics
  • Word recognition skills

Session 2: Using 1:1 sessions and small group work wisely

This session will include:

  • Assessing oral reading
  • Linking reading and writing

Session 3: Giving pupils the building blocks of writing

In this session we will explore:

  • Orally planning and rehearsing what to write
  • Learning to write in sentences
  • Teaching spelling strategies

Feedback from teachers on Dee's course

Very thorough and interesting. So much information and so many ideas !
I really enjoyed the sessions and I will be training others back at school on these important issues.
I have taken away many practical/concrete ideas - as well as the rationale behind them: they will help my students in the ways that matter most!
A wonderful, informative course which has given me so many ideas to share with my colleagues in school.

Cost: £145 per delegate which includes lunch and resources; £199 for 2 teachers from the same school
