Outstanding Primary Maths Lessons

This course will help delegates unpick the Ofsted criteria for Outstanding in Primary Mathematics teaching and meet the requirements of the new curriculum.

Delegates will review the aims of the National Curriculum for primary mathematics:

  • Fluency
  • Reasoning
  • Problem solving

Session 1: How do you structure, plan and deliver outstanding lessons?

In this session, you will consider the following elements of an outstanding lesson:

  • High expectations
  • Ensuring pupil engagement and commitment
  • Effective monitoring, marking & feedback
  • Inspirational classroom strategies

Session 2: How do we develop the critical components of mathematics at Key Stage 2?

In this session, you will consider:

  • How to challenge more able learners to fulfil their potential
  • Helping pupils develop higher order skills
  • Problem solving
  • Independent learning

Session 3: Practical activities to frame outstanding lessons

This session will include:

  • Thinking skills approaches
  • Pupil engagement and motivation strategies
  • Activities to stimulate and infuse Maths teaching

Presenter profile

Dr Ray Huntley is a mathematics' graduate (Bachelor of Education); he holds a Diploma in Mathematical Education (Distinction); he spent 18 years working in Essex schools and has taught in Melbourne, Australia.

He developed wide experience of coordinating curriculum areas, and completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship. Ray was a primary school headteacher from January 2000 to August 2002, and is a trained Section 48 Inspector for RE and Worship. He works in Initial Teacher Education and has completed a Masters Degree in Education (with Distinction) and the Education Doctorate (EdD) in mathematics education.

He has also worked as a consultant for various CPD providers, leading teachers’ courses and school-based INSET in mathematics. Ray was recently awarded Chartered Mathematics Teacher status. Ray believes in an interactive approach to mathematics' teaching and delivers his training in the same manner through stimulating problem-solving activities.
