Introduction to teaching technical understanding for the new D&T GCSE

This one day inset will provide an introduction to two important areas of technical understanding:

  • Understanding the properties of materials across a wide range of materials
  • Understanding energy with particular reference to sustainable alternative energy sources

The session will include lead seminars, practical activities, and group discussion as follows:

In the morning – considering materials

Session 1

Lead seminar with Q&A to identify and explore the concepts necessary to understand materials

Session 2

Practical activities to develop conceptual and practical understanding

Session 3

Group discussion – how to use the activities with students at KS3 and KS4 to support making design decisions and problem solving and the answering of written paper examination questions

In the afternoon – considering energy

Session 4

Lead seminar with Q&A to identify and explore the concepts necessary to understand energy

Session 5

Practical activities to develop conceptual and practical understanding

Session 6

Group discussion – how to use the activities with students at KS3 and KS4 to support making design decisions and problem solving and the answering of written paper examination questions

Delegates will be supplied with instructions for the practical activities which they can adapt and use with their students.

David Barlex is an acknowledged leader in design technology education, curriculum design and curriculum materials' development. He taught in comprehensive schools for 15 years before taking university positions in teacher education. He directed the Nuffield Design Technology Project and was Educational Manager for Young Foresight. He has worked in consultation with the DfE concerning the new National Curriculum for DT and the proposed DT GCSE.
