An Introduction to Lego®- based “Brick Therapy”

Lego®- based “Brick Therapy is about much more than playing with building bricks. Learners are given support and encouragement to develop their communication skills, identify, express and regulate their feelings and emotions, develop problem-solving skills, develop conversational skills such as turn taking, voice volume and inflection, and work on their interpretation and use of non-verbal communication.

The session will cover:

  • What is Brick Therapy?
  • Why Brick Therapy is suitable for learners with Autism or other Speech, Language and Communication Needs
  • How to implement Brick Therapy sessions in your setting

This training is suitable for both primary and secondary teachers, SENCos, Speech and Language Therapists, Teaching Assistants or anyone interested in therapeutic approaches to support young people.

Karen Ireland is a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with a BSc (Hons) degree in Speech and Language Therapy. Karen has extensive range of experience working with children who have speech, language and communication needs. She is currently employed as a Speech and Language Therapist at The Springfields Academy, Calne, a school for learners with social and emotional difficulties and/or high functioning ASD.

Karen has a passion for the development of functional social, language and vocabulary skills. She attended formal Lego®-based Therapy training in October 2017, with Dr Gina Gómez de la Cuesta, who is co-author of the book “LEGO®-Based Therapy”. Since then Karen has implemented Lego®-based Therapy “Brick Club” sessions in whole class and small groups within The Springfields Academy.
