Two-for-One Course: Unleashing the power of Grammar and Teaching Mixed-ability

This one-day course looks at areas where MFL teachers often state they wish to improve teaching and learning. It focuses on differentiation, increasing levels of challenge and engagement along with developing independent learners. The later session considers grammar for communication with practical, easily implemented ideas for lessons.

Morning – Teaching Mixed-ability MFL Classes at KS3-4

Many MFL practitioners teach mixed-ability classes in secondary schools – increasingly so at KS4 due to small GCSE cohorts or timetabling issues. This is also an aspect of teaching which is generally looked at closely during lesson observations as all pupils need to be challenged appropriately. During this morning session, Martine will concentrate particularly on:

  • The right differentiation technique for the right activity style
  • Prep-light and easy-to-manage differentiation techniques
  • Looking beyond just differentiation
  • The power of effective collaborative work
  • How nurturing more independent learners can help
  • How to help non-MFL lesson observers identify and appreciate the validity of MFL-specific techniques used with mixed-ability classes

Afternoon – Unleashing the Power of Grammar at KS3-4

After the roller-coaster ride it appears to have known in recent decades, grammar is squarely at the heart of the current MFL agenda – within a strong communication agenda. In this afternoon session, Martine will explore approaches to grammar which can help to nurture effective communicators. She will concentrate particularly on:

  • Grammar and communication: friends, not foes
  • Effective ways of introducing grammar
  • How to facilitate grammar retention
  • How to facilitate more creative grammar use
  • Grammar practice: suggestions for greater variety
  • How to bring reluctant grammarians on board
