According to Ofsted we can expect that ‘these changes will move Ofsted’s focus away from headline data to look instead at how schools are achieving these results, and whether they are offering a curriculum that is broad, rich and deep, or simply teaching to the test’
This course will be essential to make sure your school is providing a rich curriculum which supports children’s development of reading, writing and speaking and listening across all subjects. With a greater emphasis on whether schools have adopted or constructed an ambitious curriculum, school leaders are now in a strong position to evaluate and improve how reading is taught in all areas of the curriculum and how they prepare all children to make good progress and become better prepared for the next stages of their learning.

Session 3: A Practical Approach for Teaching ‘Critical Literacy’
- How to develop a genuinely cross-curricular approach to literacy:

- Reading for meaning
- Zoom in and zoom out
- Structure and style
Session 4: Literacy for all children (across all subjects)
- Skills of reading - practice and summarizing
- Evaluating texts
- Links to progress in writing and evidence-based research
- Meeting the needs of EAL and less-able readers.
This course is suitable for senior leadership team members of all key stages and those with responsibility for developing literacy across the curriculum.
Peter has spent over thirty years in teaching and twenty in senior leadership, including six as a headteacher. But he is first and foremost a teacher of English and literacy. He has been a Head of English twice in two very different high performing schools in Leicester and in London where he has significantly raised outcomes and increased the take up of English in the sixth form.
Peter is driven by a passion to ensure all students, particularly disadvantaged students, benefit from high quality education. His main role currently is as an interim senior leader supporting schools in challenging circumstances where literacy is one of the main barriers to success and, therefore, improving the quality of reading and of literacy is a daily challenge.
