Why this course?

Key Stage 3 priorities/Ofsted – The 2015 Ofsted report ‘Key Stage 3: the wasted years?’ emphasised the need to make KS3 a higher priority in secondary schools. This has happened to a degree, but Ofsted are now raising concerns about the increasing tendency to track GCSE assessment objectives back into Year 7. Examination performance appears to improve in schools which focus on genuine KS3 priorities in years 7-9.

Key Stage 3 MFL/the eBacc/Key Stage 4 retention – Building a strong KS3 foundation is particularly important not just for exam results but also in the context of KS4 retention and eBacc targets. With this in mind, the recent Teaching Schools Council’s ‘Modern foreign languages pedagogy review’ makes important recommendations for KS3 MFL. Moreover, MFL is one of the subject areas recently selected for an Ofsted review.

So, how might you strengthen MFL at KS3?

In this course, Martine will concentrate particularly on:

• Unpicking key research findings and current expectations;
• Should it stay or should it go? Key priorities for KS3 MFL;
• The many ways of prioritising training over ‘testing’;
• Basic steps for effective phonics teaching;
• Grammar, topics and communication: joined-up thinking and best practice;
• So much to learn! What to prioritise and how to facilitate retention;
• Use it well: how to promote greater spontaneity and creativity;
• How to facilitate interaction with authentic resources from an early stage;
• Shrinking lesson time? Value-for-time classroom techniques;
• Variety and effectiveness: a fresh look at homework;
• How assessment can truly support learning.

• demand little preparation;
• are easy to explain to students;
• are readily applicable to a variety of languages and topics.

Martine Pillette is an independent MFL consultant and author and a senior examiner for an international organisation. As well as working with individual schools to help MFL departments review aspects of their practice, Martine is frequently involved in initiatives aimed at supporting MFL teaching at KS2-5.
