Supporting Learners with Autism

Statistics suggest that pupils with autism make up about 1.1% of our school populations although specialist groups suggest the numbers are higher once undiagnosed pupils are taken into account. NHS referrals for autism diagnosis increased by 39% between 2021 & 2022 but delays in the system mean schools will be supporting diagnosed and undiagnosed students and this course provides guidance to fill this gap.

Autism affects all aspects of a young person’s experience of school so it is essential that staff have a sound understanding of how to provide the right support. Without this support, schools can appear to be a hostile environment for ASC pupils and their long-term outcomes deteriorate as they progress through the education system.
