Making the Leap to Headship

This course will be online:-

  • Jill is presenting via webcam, accompanied by slides and activities

This is a one day course split over two days, sessions will be 4pm to 6:30pm on Wednesday 29th June and Wednesday 6th July 2022.

Day One

Session One:

The nature of headship - how it differs from senior leadership, and why headship might appeal to you at this point in your professional journey

Session Two:

What, in your experience, characterises the best headteachers, and what kind of head do you aspire to be? What have you learnt from positive and negative leader role models during your career so far?

Session Three:

Where are you now, and how can you best prepare to take the next step? What makes you believe you are ready?

Day Two

Session Four:

The practicalities - how to you compose a compelling and persuasive letter of application, which secures you an interview?

Session Five:

How to you prepare for, and perform positively at interview? How do you navigate disappointment, and success?

Session Six:

Structured reflection - what are your next steps? How can you give yourself the best possible chance of securing the right headship in the right school at the right time? How can you make the most positive transition into the role, and ensure you make a strong beginning to your tenure?

Presenter Profile

Jill Berry taught for thirty years across six different schools in the UK, state and independent, and was a head for the last ten. Since leaving headship she has completed a doctorate, researching the transition to headship; written a book: ‘Making the Leap - Moving from Deputy to Head’ (Crown House, 2016) and carried out an extensive range of leadership development work. In 2019 she spoke at a TEDx event on the subject of ‘Take a Second Look: Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Others’. During the pandemic she has delivered a significant amount of training for serving and aspiring leaders at all levels on Zoom. Jill is an advocate for the opportunities presented by social media for networking and professional development, tweeting @jillberry102 and blogging about education at jillberry102.blog
