The Ofsted Ready Post 16 Leader: Understanding and Applying the Deep Dive Methodology
This is an intensive and fast paced webinar. You will be fully involved in several activities, working with your peers and a very experienced former HMI. This webinar will help you will gain a deeper understanding of Ofsted inspections and how they will apply to your organisation.
You will develop:
- a better understanding of the education inspection framework and the Further Education and Skills inspection handbook
- an insight into the role of the nominee and how you can use that to select the right person for the job.
- an insight into how inspectors will prepare for your inspection
- an understanding of deep dives and how they will apply to your organisation
- a focused approach to identifying where the best evidence for your organisation
In order to get the most out of this webinar, we expect you to have:
- read through the Education Inspection Framework and the Education and Skills Inspection Handbook
- a good understanding of the scope of your provision
- a detailed understanding of the key strengths and weaknesses you have found through your self-assessment process
- knowledge of any significant changes your provision has gone through in the last few years, or since the previous inspection.
This course is relevant for any provider delivering 16 to 18 study programmes: Head of Sixth Form, SLT lead for Sixth Form in an 11 to 18 school, Leader of apprenticeships, adult skills programmes, traineeships or t levels in a FE College etc.

Derrick spent 19 years as an education inspector, first with the Adult Learning Inspectorate and then as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors with Ofsted. Derrick led inspections in all further education and skills remits, and schools. Derrick held specialist advisor roles for both Engineering and ICT. Derrick went through many rounds of changes in inspection frameworks and methodologies, including carrying out pilot inspections of new schools frameworks.
During his time as an inspector, Derrick had an 18-month secondment to the British Educational Communications Technology Agency. During which time he led a sector wide initiative to help further education and skills organisations focus on safeguarding learners in a digital world. In addition, he developed how Ofsted inspected the use of technology in education.
Prior to becoming an inspector, Derrick had a varied and successful career as an engineer, both in aircraft and IT engineering. This career spanned roles from hands-on engineering to strategic leadership and management. Derrick is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, and a member of the British Computer Society. He spent time as a lecturer in colleges and in a strategic leadership of training role.
As an inspector Derrick focused on governance, leadership and management. Through the inspection process he helped organisations identify their strengths and weaknesses. Derrick also successfully helped organisations improve through a range of monitoring and improvement visits.
