This half-day course aims to support those leading SEND in their school to develop and implement their vision for improving outcomes for children and young people.

The session explores how SENCOs can transition from working in isolation to fostering a whole-school culture where every teacher and leader shares responsibility for inclusive provision.

It offers practical strategies for identifying high-impact tasks, prioritising staff development, and protecting personal well-being to ensure that SEND leadership remains both sustainable and effective. It will provide an opportunity for delegates to share practical approaches and good practice in planning and developing effective provision for pupils with SEND across their school.

The session will be structured around 7 key questions:

Q1: Are there aspects of SEND that feel impossible currently?
Q2: Do we spend enough time doing the right things?
Q3: Do we make our colleagues feel that success within SEND is possible?
Q4: Do we make teaching ‘the thing’?
Q5: Do we make our colleagues better?
Q6: Do we make SEND a whole-school issue?
Q7: Do we look after ourselves?

During the session, SENCOs will reflect on their own leadership, with opportunities to discuss and share how they maintain a balance between strategic and operational; between reactive and proactive; and between statutory process and classroom practice.

This course is suitable for primary and secondary SENCOs or aspiring SENCOs, Inclusion Coordinators and other leaders with a strategic responsibility for SEND in their school.

Gary Aubin

Gary Aubin leads on a SEND School Improvement programme with Whole Education, supporting schools and Trusts to drive a whole-school approach to supporting pupils with SEND. Gary sits on the Government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review panel.

Gary is the Education Endowment Foundation’s SEND Associate. In this role, he has worked extensively on sharing the evidence base behind high-quality teaching for SEND, as well as advised on the development of the SENCO NPQ.

As a Consultant, Gary has spoken internationally, advised the BBC, written content for the National Institute of Teaching and given talks to hundreds of Trust, Local Authority and school audiences.
