What makes effective Literacy Teaching?
This course aims to equip primary school practitioners with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver effective and cohesive literacy teaching. From ensuring that learners of all abilities are able to access information, to reading for pleasure, this course will strengthen your delivery of and passion for literacy.
Course Outline
Broken into 3 clear areas of concept, application and research, this course will help you develop and implement effective literacy teaching to learners of all abilities and backgrounds.
Starting with conceptual examples, we will look at the teaching of phonics and shared reading across all key stages taking into account the needs of the individual learner, with particular focus on language comprehension and fluency.
We will explore the interdependent relationship between reading and writing and how to help our learners become reflective and critical.
With clear reference to The Reading Framework throughout, you will gain knowledge of research backed implementation strategies and gather ideas of how to build a literacy rich environment as well as guidance on selecting texts for use across the curriculum.
Course Outcomes
- To have a clear understanding of the process of learning to read and that it is both cumulative and developmental.
- To develop interactive teaching strategies, including those for pupils with SEND, that will allow learners of all abilities and backgrounds to access provision.
- To understand the importance of language comprehension, speaking and listening from Early Years through to Year 6 and to know how to implement it in daily classroom practice.
- To understand how reading and high quality writing are intrinsically linked.
- To know how to access high quality texts and implement them across the curriculum.

Presenter Profile
Teresa Atkinson is an experienced Executive Headteacher and consultant who specialises in Curriculum Development and Coaching. She has worked with a number of training providers, designing and delivering high quality courses from Functional Skills through to Teacher Training, as well as mentoring schools who are preparing for Section 48 Inspection. Teresa has worked across both the primary and secondary sectors, as well as working 1:1 with students who have been permanently excluded. She is also a governor of River Tees Hospital School.
